James Larkin was an Irish labor organizer and activist who was responsible for the establishment of several unions and labor organizations, including the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union (ITGWU). He helped the Irish workers gained fair employment rights and made it easier for them to unionize.
Jim Larkin was born on January 21, 1876 in Liverpool, England. He grew up in the slums with little formal education.
He supported his family financially by working various jobs that include a foreman at a Liverpool dock. Being a socialist, Larkin joined the National Union of Dock Labourers (NUDL) and became a full-time union organizer in 1905.
He was transferred out of NUDL in 1907 because the union was not pleased with his militant strike methods. Afterwards, he established the ITGWU, whose political agenda included the legal rights of the 8-hour workday and a pension for workers 60 years or older.
Before Larkin became prominent in securing workers’ rights in Ireland, less than 10% of the Irish workers were unionized and most of the unions were British. Many workers and activists felt neglected by the British unions and demanded an Irish-based union. It is accurate to say that he was the answer to their prayers.
ITGWU was formed with a goal to unite all Irish workers, skilled and unskilled, to fight for their rights. Larkin was also responsible for the formation of the Labour Party in 1912. He led a series of strikes, one of them was the historic 1913 Dublin Lockout.
He staged anti-war demonstrations in Dublin when the First World War broke out. The main anti-war message that he wanted to relay to the Irish people was for them to fight for Ireland only and not for any other country.
The Irish press opposed Larkin and his unions but he gained the support of William Butler Yeats, Patrick Pearse, and Constance Markievicz. In 1914, Larkin traveled to the United States to raise money to fight the British.
He was arrested, tried, and convicted of anarchy and communism in 1920. He was pardoned three years later and was deported back to Ireland.
In 1924, he organized the Workers’ Union of Ireland (WUI). Jim Larkin remained active until his death on January 30, 1947. Because of his legacy, he went down in Irish history as a magnificent leader and a visionary who fought for the workers’ rights.
When people think of Mexico, they picture everything but Japanese food. Mexico is a country proud of its culture and its cuisine which is one of the most famous in the world. However, the franchise that is named to be the best in Mexico is Sushi Itto, a Japanese food restaurant chain. It is not the most likely of winners, but it went through the competition stages at home on Mexican soil. Later the franchise was nominated to compete with other franchises in the world and also came out first. It is not as much the franchise as the man who is the franchisee – Omar Yunes.
Omar Yunes started to manage just one restaurant, and the chain has reached 13 restaurants in different cities. It is a small chain in general, so 13 restaurants are quite an impressive number. Omar Yunes is a hands-on franchisee who changed the way the relationship between the franchise owners and the franchisees work.
He believes that hospitality and catering businesses need to be held to high standards for any restaurant to succeed considering how competitive the industry is nowadays. He communicated with his managers every day and created a way to measure success and performance at each of his restaurants. There are also clear training guidelines which allow managers to be more effective when training new staff members.
Omar Yunes believes that his managers know what they are doing so there is no need to micro-manage them. However, he is very approachable if there are issues people need to discuss with him. His initiative and decisions caught the eye of his boss, the CEO of Sushi Itto. They recognize the importance of this kind of work. It is because of franchise holders like Omar Yunes business thrive and become successful.
Dedication and passion for excellent service are significant. This franchise holder has both of them and then some. There is no sign that the franchise will stop with just 13 restaurants since Omar Yunes is always looking for new business opportunities that would work well in the future of the representation of Japanese cuisine in Mexico.
In 2008, Desiree Perez was part of the Roc Nation’s team that spearheaded a $150 million deal between Rock Nation and Live Nation; the deal is on the verge of expiring. Credible sources indicate that Live Nation is willing to renew the deal but with a renegotiation. Live Nation is inclined to continue its touring deal with Roc Nation, but it is shying away from recorded music deal; perhaps the touring deal is more lucrative.Recently, Jay z—the founder of Roc Nation—was pictured with Desiree Perez, the Chief Operating Officer of Roc Nation. The two are said to have met with Sir Lucian Grainge, the chairman, and CEO of Universal Music Group.
The meeting which took place at Grainge’s offices located in Santa Monica, California, is thought to have been about Universal Music Group buying a stake in Roc Nation. However, reliable sources indicate that the meeting’s agenda was far from the imminent expiration of Live Nation’s deal with Roc Nation.Presently, Universal Music Group has a distribution deal with Live Nation. The deal is considered a small percentage of Roc Nation’s business. If Universal Music Group buys a bigger stake at Roc Nation, it will benefit from Roc Nation’s artists including Rihanna, Meek Mill, Fat Joe, and Shakira.
Also, Jay-Z would have more funds to develop new talents and promote his music streaming service, Tidal, which is under an immense competition from Apple Music and Spotify services. Desiree popularly known as Dez has been part of Roc Nation for over nine years. She has been on the forefront advancing the entertainment company’s agenda. Many of Roc Nation’s achievements can partly be credited to Dez. Some artists such as Rihanna have benefitted from Dez’s business acumen. For example, Rihanna’s Anti World Tour got $25 million from Samsung courtesy of Dez’s lobbying for the funds.

Debates ensue over the need to champion human and civil rights for immigrants by migrant rights advocates. While it is viable to incorporate them, there are some limitations.
Despite having a rich tradition of civic and political rights, the United States still assigns little meaning to cultural and socio-economic rights that are just as important.
The Arizona Senate Bill 1070, is a classic example of the need for civil rights in immigration policy. The law attracted attention nationally, with many claiming that the law supports racial profiling. Since its introduction in 2010, several court cases were submitted to counter and amend provisions in the bill.
In a ruling made by Judge Susan Bolton several provisions were barred including; detaining someone accused of committing a crime until their immigration status is known, and prohibition of undocumented migrants to seek and apply for jobs.
The fight for migrant rights is not as easy today as several state laws have restrictions. Migrant rights advocates continue to dialogue with the various states to enable a smooth coexistence. There are human, civic and migrant rights groups that do a commendable job at state, national and global level.
Lacey and Larkin Frontera fund
Two local journalists, Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin, were arrested for highlighting the social injustices committed by Joe Arpaio, the then county Sheriff of Maricopa and the state of the prison.
The two-addressed racial profiling, illegal detentions, and mistreatment of Latinos. Lacey and Larkin got released within the same day after appeals and outcry from the people.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin sued the county office in a landmark case that ended with Maricopa county parting with $ 3.7 million as compensation and the birth of Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund.
The Frontera Fund’s objective is to address the rights and freedoms of the Hispanic community in Arizona. The fund supports non-profits that work for a similar course. Their objective is to curb the fear perpetuated by political groups about Hispanics and Brown skins.
American Immigration Council
Lacey and Larkin partner with this organization that works to secure immigrant rights and shapes attitudes and feelings towards immigrants. The body utilizes international exchange programs and education to enlighten the American citizens on how immigration has contributed to the now diverse American culture.
Their programs and policies are customed to encourage humane and sound immigration policies, ensure justice for immigrants as provided for by the law and align migrant laws with the constitutional provisions.
They have a pool of immigration lawyers who operate through the American Immigration Lawyers Association that help them implement their programs.
Other groups that advocate for human, civic and migrant laws are the United Nations Human Rights Commission, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Network for Immigrants and Refugee Rights and the American Civil Liberties Union among others.
These organizations are contributing to policy building, national building and general advocacy for rights and freedoms for all. Over the last one year, discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of migrants have taken center stage in the media and political agendas.
Human rights organizations provide the needed balance in such discussions.
