The Working Rights Hero: The Life of James Larkin

James Larkin was an Irish labor organizer and activist who was responsible for the establishment of several unions and labor organizations, including the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union (ITGWU). He helped the Irish workers gained fair employment rights and made it easier for them to unionize.

Jim Larkin was born on January 21, 1876 in Liverpool, England. He grew up in the slums with little formal education.

He supported his family financially by working various jobs that include a foreman at a Liverpool dock. Being a socialist, Larkin joined the National Union of Dock Labourers (NUDL) and became a full-time union organizer in 1905.

He was transferred out of NUDL in 1907 because the union was not pleased with his militant strike methods. Afterwards, he established the ITGWU, whose political agenda included the legal rights of the 8-hour workday and a pension for workers 60 years or older.

Before Larkin became prominent in securing workers’ rights in Ireland, less than 10% of the Irish workers were unionized and most of the unions were British. Many workers and activists felt neglected by the British unions and demanded an Irish-based union. It is accurate to say that he was the answer to their prayers.

ITGWU was formed with a goal to unite all Irish workers, skilled and unskilled, to fight for their rights. Larkin was also responsible for the formation of the Labour Party in 1912. He led a series of strikes, one of them was the historic 1913 Dublin Lockout.

He staged anti-war demonstrations in Dublin when the First World War broke out. The main anti-war message that he wanted to relay to the Irish people was for them to fight for Ireland only and not for any other country.

The Irish press opposed Larkin and his unions but he gained the support of William Butler Yeats, Patrick Pearse, and Constance Markievicz. In 1914, Larkin traveled to the United States to raise money to fight the British.

He was arrested, tried, and convicted of anarchy and communism in 1920. He was pardoned three years later and was deported back to Ireland.

In 1924, he organized the Workers’ Union of Ireland (WUI). Jim Larkin remained active until his death on January 30, 1947. Because of his legacy, he went down in Irish history as a magnificent leader and a visionary who fought for the workers’ rights.

Why Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund and Other Human Rights Group are Essential in the Country

Debates ensue over the need to champion human and civil rights for immigrants by migrant rights advocates. While it is viable to incorporate them, there are some limitations.

Despite having a rich tradition of civic and political rights, the United States still assigns little meaning to cultural and socio-economic rights that are just as important.

The Arizona Senate Bill 1070, is a classic example of the need for civil rights in immigration policy. The law attracted attention nationally, with many claiming that the law supports racial profiling. Since its introduction in 2010, several court cases were submitted to counter and amend provisions in the bill.

In a ruling made by Judge Susan Bolton several provisions were barred including; detaining someone accused of committing a crime until their immigration status is known, and prohibition of undocumented migrants to seek and apply for jobs.

The fight for migrant rights is not as easy today as several state laws have restrictions. Migrant rights advocates continue to dialogue with the various states to enable a smooth coexistence. There are human, civic and migrant rights groups that do a commendable job at state, national and global level.

Lacey and Larkin Frontera fund

Two local journalists, Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin, were arrested for highlighting the social injustices committed by Joe Arpaio, the then county Sheriff of Maricopa and the state of the prison.

The two-addressed racial profiling, illegal detentions, and mistreatment of Latinos. Lacey and Larkin got released within the same day after appeals and outcry from the people.

Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin sued the county office in a landmark case that ended with Maricopa county parting with $ 3.7 million as compensation and the birth of Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund.

The Frontera Fund’s objective is to address the rights and freedoms of the Hispanic community in Arizona. The fund supports non-profits that work for a similar course. Their objective is to curb the fear perpetuated by political groups about Hispanics and Brown skins.

American Immigration Council

Lacey and Larkin partner with this organization that works to secure immigrant rights and shapes attitudes and feelings towards immigrants. The body utilizes international exchange programs and education to enlighten the American citizens on how immigration has contributed to the now diverse American culture.

Their programs and policies are customed to encourage humane and sound immigration policies, ensure justice for immigrants as provided for by the law and align migrant laws with the constitutional provisions.

They have a pool of immigration lawyers who operate through the American Immigration Lawyers Association that help them implement their programs.

Other groups that advocate for human, civic and migrant laws are the United Nations Human Rights Commission, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Network for Immigrants and Refugee Rights and the American Civil Liberties Union among others.

These organizations are contributing to policy building, national building and general advocacy for rights and freedoms for all. Over the last one year, discussions on the advantages and disadvantages of migrants have taken center stage in the media and political agendas.

Human rights organizations provide the needed balance in such discussions.

How George Soros Returned to the Political Landscape

George Soros is one of the most impressive investors that the United States has ever seen and he is completely a self made businessman. Soros was born and raised in Hungary before he was forced to flee his home country during the Nazi occupation. Soros would move to London where he would work his way through school, studying at the London School of Economics while moonlighting as a porter and a waiter. After earning his degree Soros would set sail to America where he would eventually start the Soros Hedge Fund and become one of the most prolific businessmen that the United States has ever seen. Due to his progressive nature and his willingness to back progressive causes, he has become one of the greatest opponents to the modern day right wing — and that hit a fever pitch during the 2016 presidential election. Learn more about his profile at businessinsider.com.

The presidential election of 2016 in the United States is going to be scrutinized for generations to come. The rise of Donald Trump and his dangerous brand of vitriolic populism is something that the country won’t ever forget and will hopefully choose to learn from. Still, Trump’s rise and legacy will have to include his inspiration to get George Soros back into the political fray. Soros has never been afraid to invest in politics, especially when he fiercely believes in the cause, but he mostly wants to keep money away from the political machine. Still, as Soros’ adviser Michael Vachon would say, the stakes were simply too high. Donald Trump was more than a political threat, he was an existential threat and Soros had to respond in kind.

So, George Soros leaped back into the fray in order to start backing some of the bigger progressive causes in the political game. Soros would end up giving $25 million to pro-progressive PACs up and down the ticket. He would support End Citizens United, a special PAC focused on campaign finance reform, as well as a slew of other PACs including: immigrant voter rights, opposition research for the DNC, the DNC itself, and Pro-Clinton PACs. Soros has never been afraid to put money down when he believes in a cause and the $25 million he set into place probably wouldn’t even be noticed from his bank account. Read more at The New York Times about George.

Most people are probably aware of George Soros for his 2004 run as a backer alongside then Presidential nominee Al Gore. At the time Soros was one of the biggest political donors in the country, giving a record breaking $30 million to help Gore try and get elected. Now Soros seems more content to watch from the sidelines, pushing his weight and power toward concepts that he believes strongly in — such as preventing Donald Trump from installing his populist agenda.
